Great Home Office Ideas to Tackle Clutter

Conquering clutter is at the top of everyone’s list these days, and your home office should be no exception. In fact, your home office should be the first spot that you get organized. An organized office increases your productivity and peace of mind, and provides you with a professional space to further your career.

Here are some great home office ideas that will get you organized in no time.

Handle paper clutter

One of the first things that can get out of control in a home office is paper. Whether it’s bills, reports, or just your own notes, paper piles can quickly take over your life. One of the most life-changing home office ideas can be finding a way to organize all that paper.

First, find a space where you can spread out. Second, go around and gather every single piece of stray paper you can find. Third, sort the paper into three piles.

  1. File – Start a pile of everything that is actually important and needs to be filed. Have a stack of folders on hand so you can quickly create new files as needed. Keep both short and long term papers that you will have to have access in the future.
  2. Shred – These are documents that you don’t need anymore, but may contain sensitive personal information. If a document has your name and address, account number, or any financial details, it should be shredded. If you don’t have an actual shredder, you can use scissors or at least tear it up. Get in the habit of shredding these types of documents immediately to prevent the chance of identity theft.
  3. Recycle – Anything that’s truly garbage goes in the recycle bin.

Once you have all your papers organized, keep it that way. Deal with papers immediately by filing, shredding, or recycling them.

Another home office idea is to sign up for paperless billing and email notifications instead of receiving paper through the mail. This cuts down on your paper clutter and helps the environment at the same time.

Use drawer organizers

Little boxes could save your sanity when it comes to your office drawers. Take absolutely everything out of your desk drawers. After you throw out the junk, organize what’s left by type. You can either buy pre-made drawer organizers with compartments, or just use whatever you have around the house. Shoe boxes, bowls, or small trays are a great solution to reign in and organize the clutter.

Think vertical

If your office space is small, like an office in a closet for example, you won’t have a lot of horizontal surface space for storage. That’s OK, but you’ll need to think vertical. Hanging file systems are a great way to save space and you can go all the way to the ceiling with shelves and cupboards
