Home Office Ideas From People Who Work From Home

Setting up your home office can be liberating, but 60 percent of polled Remoters still say their home office needs work. First, you have to take into account the space you have to work with and how much money you’re willing to spend on your home office. Once you have a home office idea established, there are hundreds of products to consider, which is where things get overwhelming. To make things easier, we’ve selected some of the best work from home office ideas shared by remote workers profiled in our Rolling Remote series.

Below are some of their (and our!) favorite home office ideas.

Desk

Bamboo mini desk

One of the biggest perks of working from home is the ability to switch locations. You may start on your couch, move to the desk, and wrap up the day at the kitchen table. Julia recommends this mini desk for those days when getting out of bed or off the couch just isn’t a reality.

DIY sitting and standing desks

If you adhere to the “sitting is the new smoking” mentality, access to a standing desk is essential. But the reality is that there are some days when sitting is just more plausible than a day of standing. Dave got crafty and built two home office desks–one standing and one sitting–using large whiteboards for the surface. He says “The sitting desk is 3.5’x6′ with a whiteboard surface for quick sketches. The standing desk is opposite the sitting desk and has a separate external monitor I can move my Macbook to.”

Varidesk

While not called out by the Remoter tribe, some of our staff use the Varidesk Pro Plus 360 to easily transition a standard sitting desk to a standing desk. You can take a call sitting down, then quickly move back to standing to finish the day on your feet.

Tech

Apple’s magic mouse and keyboard

Dave gave Apple’s magic mouse and keyboard a shoutout in his profile. Both items (which you have to buy separately) sync to your Mac automatically via Bluetooth and the rechargeable battery lasts for about a month. If you have both the mouse and keyboard, you can use them with your iPad or iPhone which will make your life a million times easier if you’re traveling.

If you don’t have a Mac, we recommend the Logitech MK710 wireless keyboard and mouse. Both are AA battery-powered, but reviews claim the batteries last for three years, practically eliminating any worry around them dying in the middle of a project.

Thunderbolt 3 

Unless you want to be constantly peering at your tiny laptop screen, Thunderbolt technology should be a key part of your home office setup. With Thunderbolt you can connect your laptop to several external monitors, allowing you to work from a desktop-like computer that’s powered by your laptop. The key is finding what sort port your computer has and what adaptor you’ll need.

LaCie hard drive

When it comes to data storage, Megan swears by the LaCie mobile hard drive. The drive quickly transfers data to and from your computer and works well with the Thunderbolt 3 setup above. The drive works with Mac computers and PCs that have standard USB (USB-A) ports.

Accessories

Bose noise-cancelling headphones

Patrick works in a coworking space, so these noise cancelling headphones are are must. But even if you work from home, there are times when you need to block out your neighbor’s snow blower or the construction down the street. Patrick uses Bose headphones for “when I really need to get in the zone.”

JUBOR laptop stand

Dave recommended the JAS PRO laptop stand, but since the product is now discontinued we found a similar, foldable stand that fits most laptops. The JUBOR stand will keep your laptop cool and accessible while you work using the Thunderbolt setup we described above.

Whiteboard

When a project or task requires big thinking, a Google doc or spreadsheet just won’t cut it. A whiteboard is the perfect place to scrawl all your flow charts, diagrams, and to-do lists. Tracy says, “Sometimes it helps to be a bit more physical when thinking and planning. Standing, away from the screens on my desk, helps me focus and brainstorm more effectively.”

Paperless notebook and pen 

Leilani is constantly traveling and doing big thinking around how to best run her team. Rather than jotting her ideas or vision down on paper, she uses the Everlast Rocketbook erasable notebook and Pilot Frixion Pen to go paper free.

Amazon Echo

Tracy says that in addition to controlling lights, he uses the Amazon Echo “for timers all day, and to get answers quickly when I don’t feel like typing or leaving the doc I’m working on.”

Ambiance

Candles

Something as small as a candle can help separate work and home life. Bridget uses scented candles to keep her calm, focused, and balanced during the work day. Then she says “blowing out the candle at the end of my workday is a nice ritual to symbolize transitioning back into my home life.”
