Rolling remote with Shauna Gordon

Shauna makes a living working in web application development, but outside of work, her interests and passions are varied. You’d be just as likely to find her enjoying a virtual reality experience as you would be to find her making soap or working in her garden.

Below, she shares a photo of her home office–where work, virtual reality play, and soap making all take place–and introduces us to her furry coworkers.

Quick-fire profile

How many years have you worked remotely? Off and on for 4 years

Where are you based? Columbus, Ohio

Where do you spend most of your remote work hours? In my home office, but I also love working from Upper Cup Coffee in the winter and The Market in the spring and summer months.

Are you most productive in the morning or at night? Early bird

Coffee or tea? Why not both? Also, I may have put tea in this mug, because why not.

Shauna’s home office setup and decor

What type of desk do you use?

I use VARIDESK’s sit to stand converting desk at home

What type of chair do you use while at work?

AKRacing’s Overture chair at home, when I’m sitting

What features do you like most about your work space?

Lots of natural light and what will eventually be a fantastic view into my perennial garden.

Do you share your work space with anyone? Tell us about them!

My S.O. works from home now too, but we have separate office spaces. Fur-babies come and go, but are pretty chill most of the day and aren’t usually disruptive.

Remote work pros and cons: Shauna’s take

What are the biggest pros and cons of remote work for you?

Pros include schedule flexibility, travel flexibility, more focus, better work-life balance, more time from cutting your commute, better work culture, less stressful work environment, and fewer transportation/work expenses.

I’ve found there are culture issues only when companies have remote options tacked on to a core “office-first” mentality.

What software technologies do you use on a regular basis?

Asana, Slack, Zoom for video conferencing, TSheets for time tracking, Wave for accounting and invoicing, Azlo for banking and invoicing, and GitLab for code storage.

What habit allows you to be more productive during the day?

My daily routine: get up, workout (on workout days), shower, make coffee, and then work. I listen to specific music and disconnect at the end of the day by keeping set work hours.

What are the 3 items you can’t live without while working remotely? (If you have a brand you love, please name them!)

  1. Swiss Gear laptop backpack–it’s my office-in-a-bag!
  2. Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones for when the co-working space gets too noisy.
  3. Chargers for everything
